Back — where this land came from

Before this deed: the Narragansett reservation
The State of Rhode Island is the grantor because the Act of 1880 (detribalization) ended the tribe's title to its reserved tract — about 64 square miles carved out of Ninigret's cession of 28 March 1709 (State Records, Land Evidence 3, p. 273; Tucker, Historical Sketch of Charlestown, 1877, pp. 23–24) — the State paying $5,000 for the common lands, all but two acres, and selling them in lots in 1882–84. This deed is one of those sales. Behind it stands tribal land, not an individual's; the chain back from here is the tribe's, and the roll of 1880–84 (324 names) says who the tribe was. From Ninigret — every such instrument ▸

⛔ The record we hold stops here: no later instrument we have read cites this one, and no later conveyance by the grantee is linked by name. The index is complete to 1987, so the gap is in the words: deeds of this era seldom cite book and page, and only about half the instruments of 1936-1965 have been transcribed (some 6,000 were never imaged), so a citation to this deed may sit in a page not yet read.
