To BURDICK GEORGE F life
Premises fifty (50) rods square · part of the common on a certain plan entitled "wooden Reservation West side" (Kent Common, Charlestown)

Back — where this land came from

Before this deed: the Narragansett reservation
The State of Rhode Island is the grantor because the Act of 1880 (detribalization) ended the tribe's title to its reserved tract — about 64 square miles carved out of Ninigret's cession of 28 March 1709 (State Records, Land Evidence 3, p. 273; Tucker, Historical Sketch of Charlestown, 1877, pp. 23–24) — the State paying $5,000 for the common lands, all but two acres, and selling them in lots in 1882–84. This deed is one of those sales. Behind it stands tribal land, not an individual's; the chain back from here is the tribe's, and the roll of 1880–84 (324 names) says who the tribe was.
